When does a floorboard need to be replaced?
Here at The Floor Sanding Experts, we aim to renovate wooden floors by sanding them and using other techniques to lovingly restore existing floorboards. We prefer to avoid replacing floorboards when possible in order to maintain the original appearance of the floor. Unfortunately, there isn’t always any other option. If a floorboard is no longer fit for purpose and can’t be restored, we have to remove it so it can be replaced. However, you may be wondering how we determine which floorboards are beyond repair. There are several things that might make it impossible to restore a floorboard. We’ll examine them in today’s blog entry. 1. Severe fractures If a floorboard has been subjected to extreme weight or pressure, it might crack. Some fractures are small enough or clean enough to be repaired. However, if a floorboard fractures in an uneven way, sustains multiple fractures or cracks completely into several pieces, restoring it may not be an option. In these cases, it’s often best to replace the damaged floorboard with a reclaimed floorboard of the same size and style. |
2. Rot When floorboards are subjected to moist conditions (or other unfavourable conditions) for prolonged periods of time, they can start to rot. Rot cannot really be repaired or reversed. What’s more, rotten floorboards may be unstable or even dangerous, so it is not advisable to keep them. If a floorboard has started to rot, the best course of action is usually to have it replaced. Full restoration of that particular board is not likely to be possible.
3. Extreme warping Wooden floors tend to warp over time. Most of the time, floor sanding is enough to correct the problem and make the boards more even. However, on very rare occasions, boards can warp so much that they simply cannot be made to fit into the floor properly. This level of warping usually only occurs under extreme conditions, such as flooding or intense heat. If it does occur, however, it may be better to replace the damaged board or boards instead of trying to repair them. We always aim to repair and restore floorboards rather than replace them. However, as you can see, this isn’t always possible. In extreme circumstances, replacements have to be found. As flooring experts, we can help you restore floorboards or replace those that can’t be restored. Get in touch with us today to find out more. |
